7. Title of thesis: Treatment measure for wastewater from Pb –Zn ore exploitation and processing in Bac Kan Province.

8. Major: Soil and Water Environment                             9. Code: 62440303

10. Supervisors: 1. Prof. Dr. Mai Trong Nhuan

2. Assoc. Prof.Dr. Sci. Nguyen Xuan Hai

11. Summary of the new findings of thesis:

- Sorption materials were modified from iron mine drainage sludge, and native plant species (Phragmites australis) was used and treatment of wastewater contaminated with heavy metals in Pb-Zn mines was assessed;

- The combination/integration of modified material and native plant species was assessed as an effective measure for treatment of wastewater from Pb-Zn ore exploitation and processing in Lung Vang area (Cho Don - Bac Kan).

12. Practical applied capability

The combination of mineral materials and plant for treatment of wastewater from Pb – Zn ore exploitation and processing was proposed on the basis of using mine drainage sludge and native plant species. The results of laboratory experiments and pilot scale in Lung Vang (Cho Don, Bac Kan) demonstrate remediation and cost effectiveness and environment-friendliness of this treatment measure. The increase of treatment demand for ore exploitation and processing wastewater, the abundant supply of iron mine drainage sludge, wide distribution, and well adaptive capacity of Phragmites australis indicate the high application perspectives of this treatment measure in Vietnam.

13. Further research directions:

- Treatment measure for wastewater from Pb –Zn ore exploitation and processing should be widely applied other mines in Bac Kan province similar polymetallic mines.

- Treatment of used modified mineral material and native plant (Phragmites australis) should be assessed and tested.
