7. Official thesis title: Research on the characteristics of organic pollution in river water of some major cities in the North and propose solutions to reduce environmental pllution

8. Major: Environmental science                          9. Code: 9440301.01

10. Supervisors: Prof.Dr. Nguyen Manh Khai and Asso.Prof.Dr.Sc Nguyen Xuan Hai

11. Summary of the new findings of the thesis

- Evaluate the characteristics of urban drainage systems in some inner-city rivers in the North of Vietnam, focusing on cities: Hanoi, Phu Ly, Bac Ninh and Hai Duong.

- Assess the current water quality status of inner-city river and drainage canals in some large cities in the North of Vietnam.

- Determine the characteristics of organic pollution in inner-city river water.

- Identify selection criteria and research solutions to reduce organic pollution in inner-city river water in some large cities in the North of Vietnam

- Propose a comprehensive solution for urban wastewater management in general and a solution for treating organic pollution in inner-city river water in particular.

12. Paratical applicability, if any: The results of the thesis can be applied to the treatment of organic matter pollution in inner-city water in cities in Vietnam (such as the capital Hanoi), which is a solution for improving river water quality that has been adopted by many countries applied in the world

13. Further research directions, if any:

- Continue to research and propose planning solutions to improve the landscape and improve water quality of inner-city rivers. The renovation of the urban landscape along both sides of the river is based on the principle of ecological urban construction, associated with the direction of sustainable urban development. That means preserving the humanity and attachment of the river to urban development to turn it into a landscape, a place for community activities and a highlight of urban areas.

- The thesis initially evaluates the quality of inner-city river sediment in Hanoi capital, finding that the content of organic matter include total N, total P is high; The content of stable organic substances PAHs in sediments is also of significant value. Therefore, it is recommended to continue further research on the effects of organic pollution on bottom sediments of urban rivers.

- To minimize water pollution from inner-city rivers of Hanoi city in particular and urban areas where inner-city rivers flow through and act as level I drainage channels in general, it is recommended that competent authorities deploy this pilot model at To Lich river, thereby evaluating the effectiveness of the solution and replicating it to urban areas with similar inner rivers.
